Vidalta tablets are used to control over active thyroid glands (hyperthyroidism). This is a common condition of older cats, though it is unusual in young cats. Hyperthyroidism develops spontaneously over a period of time and results in a number of symptoms. Typically affected cats lose weight despite eating well. They may behave in a slightly agitated or over-active way, and will tend to have a fast heart rate, even when at rest. They may show vomiting or diarrhoea too. Vidalta tablets are designed to reduce the excess production of thyroid hormone from the thyroid glands. Vidalta are classed as a sustained release type of tablet. This helps to maintain their effectiveness over the whole day. It is important to try and give Vidalta tablets to cats whole, not crushed, for this to work most effectively.

Vidalta tablets can show side effects sometimes, such as vomiting or diarrhoea. Occasionally they cause dermatitis of the face and neck, resulting in small, itchy, sore patches. It might be necessary to reduce the dose or stop treatment if side effects are seen, so veterinary advice needs to be taken.
